The oldest book where Šimáček’s name appears is the Yearbook of the Municipal Theatre in Olomouc in the First Year of the Liberated Republic 1945 – 19464 by Rudolf Kulhánek – sets by the artist, such as Alois Jirásek’s Lucerna, Antonín Dvořák’s Jacobin or Boris Godunov by Modest Petrovitch Mussorgsky.

  9. Prague Quadrennial 1967/1971 – International Exhibition of Stage Design – 1971 and the previous year 1967 evaluated in the publication Jana Pleskačová. Oldřich Šimáček won a gold medal at the PQ in 1971 for a set of stage designs.
  10. Book Tchecoslováquia scenografia, The 1973 Bienal de São Paulo was published on the occasion of a very important exhibition of fine arts and theatre architecture in São Paulo. Oldřich Šimáček won the award for the best foreign set designer at this show. The chapter on Šimáček was written by Jiří Kotalík, describing his life, current contribution, artistic intention and period of creation. Kotalík describes Šimáček’s artistic intentions: “[…] Oldřich Šimáček is an artist of a wide horizon and expression versatility; it originates from his conviction that stage design is not a branch being an end in itself but a line the mission and sense of which is lying in an active co-operation with all components of the dramatic or musical work being brought into effect on the stage . That is why for Oldřich Šimáček the original inspiration and the guiding rules are given by the author’s or by the musician’s authentic message; in decoding and interpreting of what the author has to say the designer proceeds hand in hand with the stage director so as to bring about for creative actions and gestures of play-actors, singers, dancers and acting area being able to integrate and magnify the resulting impression of scenic realization. ”
  11. The book was supplemented by a catalogue for the same show, Bienal de São Paulo, Outubro/Novembro. Dagmar Tučná wrote an introductory word about the Czechoslovak exhibition in this work, and a contribution by Jiří Kotalík described Czech scenography in general. The book contains an extensive pictorial appendix, which includes both the scenography of Oldřich Šimáček and the work of costume designer Helena Bezáková, which was also awarded at this show. Both books were published in English with Portuguese titles.
  12. Another book, Oldřich Šimáček – Stage Designs and Drawings, was published on the occasion of Šimáček’s next solo exhibition in 1978 in Olomouc at the Music Theatre. The author of the text in the catalogue is probably Radoslav Lošťák, because he gave an introductory word at the opening. This exhibition took place from February 15 to March 6, 1978. The catalogue is accompanied by drawings by Oldřich Šimáček.
  13. The Theatre Institute in Prague organized the exhibition in 1979 Oldřich Šimáček – an exhibition of scenographic works. This exhibition took place in the foyer of the Theatre in Vinohrady in Prague. The curator of the exhibition was Helena Albertová. The introductory text was written by Jiří Kotalík, the next part, representing Oldřich Šimáček, is a variant of the text from the catalogue from the Olomouc exhibition from 1978.
  14. Another catalogue, Oldřich Šimáček / Scenography, comes from an independent exhibition of Oldřich Šimáček, which took place in 1981 in the House of Arts of the City of Brno, in the Cabinet of Graphics of the House of the Lord of Kunštát. The catalogue begins with a quote from the artist himself – Oldřich Šimáček: “Based on the meaning and emotional content of the original, taking into account the staging intention. Finding a suitable and unrepeatable artistic solution for the stage space and costume. ”Another text about the author’s life, awards and his work was written by Zuzana Ledererová. The publication is significant in that the author first characterized Šimáček’s work here: “[…] If we want to characterize the scenographic work of Oldřich Šimáček according to external features, we find that it is more than difficult, because the artist approaches the artistic form of the performance. saying “from within”, that is, in the best sense of the word, serves the theme and the main idea of ​​the game, its atmosphere, which he also co-creates.
  15. Another Prague exhibition called Oldřich Šimáček took place in the Vincenc Kramář Gallery in 1982. The exhibition was organized by the Association of Czech Fine Artists and on its occasion, it published a catalogue, which is basically the most extensive source. The text of the catalog, again authored by Jiří Kotalík, was first used in English in 1973 in the book Tchecoslováquia scenografia, XII. Bienal de São Paulo. The text is supplemented by a description of the work of the late seventies and early eighties.
  16. The brochure Contemporary Scenography, which is part of the Contemporary Czech Art edition, was written by Vladimír Jindra in 1982. The book contains short medallions of important Czech scenographers, introduces us to their most significant works and briefly characterizes their work. In a contribution about Šimáček, Jindra evaluates the stage design for Giuseppe Verdi’s opera Rigoletto from 1973.
  17. Publications Czech Scenography of XX. Century by Věra Ptáčková from 1982, is the only comprehensive work on Czech scenography. Oldřich Šimáček does not give much space in the book, compared to other scenographers, his art is devoted very briefly. The book contains an extensive pictorial appendix in which Šimáček’s works appear.
  18. An important book is the National Theatre and its Predecessors with the subtitle Dictionary of the Artists of the Vlastenský, Stavovský, Provisional and National Theatre’s from 1988. The publication names all important personalities with whom the artist has collaborated.
  19. In 1989, another of Šimáček’s solo exhibitions took place in Olomouc, Deserved Artist Oldřich Šimáček – Paintings. The catalogue for the exhibition is accompanied by poems by Novalis and Rilke, even a quote by Oldřich Šimáček and a text about the artist, which is based on the catalogue for the Olomouc exhibition from 1978. Oldřich Šimáček: “There is no art without moral responsibility.”
  20. The last book about Šimáček is the publication Deserved Artist Oldřich Šimáček, Scenography. This extensive catalogue was published in 1989 on the occasion of Šimáček’s solo exhibition and life anniversary, for the artist’s 70th birthday. The exhibition took place in the Regional Gallery of Fine Arts in Olomouc. The exhibition catalogue contains biographical data as well as a list of individual exhibitions and awards. The author of the text is again Jirí Kotalík. The main text in this catalogue, dealing with the scenographic work of Oldřich Šimáček, is almost identical to the catalogue from 1982, the author of which is also Jiří Kotalík. The catalogue accompanies an inventory of Šimáček’s entire work, from his beginning in the Olomouc Theatre, through his work at the National Theatre in Prague, until 1989, when he retired.
  21. Josef Josefík’s book Oldřich Stibor State Theatre Olomouc 1920 – 1990 is also interesting, with the subtitle Almanac on the 70th Anniversary of the Establishment of the Czech Theatre in Olomouc – A Pictorial Walk in Seven Chapters, published by the Oldřich Stibor State Theatre in Olomouc in 1990. In this case, it is a pictorial work containing photographs of actors and scenes, but also of other personalities behind the scenes and at work in the theatre. Oldřich Šimáček appears in this book in the chapter “Personalities”, where he is photographed with his long-time friend, the head of the play, Jaromír Pleskot, and in the chapter “Scenography and its Transformations”.
  22. Oldřich Šimáček can also be found in encyclopaedic dictionaries. So far the last, Czech biographical dictionary of XX. century.
  23. The name of Oldřich Šimáček appears in the first volume in a two-volume publication on Czech scenography from 2007, History of Czech Fine Arts. In them, Věra Ptáčková briefly characterizes the work of O. Šimáček.
  24. A large publication by the theatrologist Vladimír Just Theatre in a totalitarian system: the story of Czech theatre (1945 – 1989) not only in dates and contexts from 2010 is a reworked work following an older book from 1995 Czech theatre culture in dates and contexts 1945 – 1989. Publications represents the development of theatre from 1945 until the revolution in 1989 and its encyclopaedic character is an excellent tool for contextual research. Oldřich Šimáček is mentioned many times in the book, it is largely only the dates of the premieres, his style is not discussed further here.

Články o díle a životě Oldřicha Šimáčka se objevovaly také v odborných časopisech v podobě různých recenzí nebo rozhovorů, dokonce i v novinách. Velmi užitečnou internetovou stránkou je stránka Ústavu pro českou literaturu Akademie věd ČR (http://archiv.ucl.cas.cz/), kde je volně k dispozici digitalizovaný archiv vybraných časopisů. V minulosti vznikala celá řada odborných časopisů a periodik, které se zabývaly divadlem, scénografií a kulturou všeobecně. Shromážděné prameny se nachází ve fondech Divadelního ústavu v Praze. Tyto materiály společně s vybranými novinovými články a statěmi z odborných časopisů jsou uloženy v samostatné složce s nápisem „Šimáček Oldřich“

 

  1. Scéna, čtrnáctideník pro otázky divadla, filmu, rozhlasu a televize. Oldřich Šimáček se v tomto časopise objevoval poměrně často.
  2. Rozhovory, kde prezentoval své názory.
  3. U „Kulatého stolu“, kde odborníci řešili problematiku a poslání svého oboru.
  4. Divadelní noviny, kde se objevovaly krátké zprávy o Šimáčkové životě, o novinkách
  5. v divadlech, kde působil i odborné recenze samotných inscenací
  6. Časopis Acta scaenographica se více zaměřoval na scénografii po umělecké i technologické stránce.
  7. Nový časopis s názvem Interscaena: acta scaenographica. Šimáčkovo jméno se v tomto časopise objevovalo poměrně často, mnohokrát v anketách, v recenzích jeho inscenací a také v rozhovorech.
  8. Diskuze v časopise Divadlo v článku „Slovo mají jevištní výtvarníci“. Článek začal úvodním referátem Antonína Dvořáka a pokračoval diskusními příspěvky scénografů ze zasedání komise jevištních výtvarníku při Svazu československých divadelních umělců. Časopis Scénografie otiskl o Šimáčkově umění dvě studie z roku 1983.
  9. Periodikum Zprávy divadelního ústavu otisklo článek „Hlasy holandského tisku o Oldřichu Šimáčkovi“, kde je zveřejněna koláž úryvku recenzí a pochvalných kritik ze zahraničních časopisů, hodnotící jeho výpravu ke hře Prsten Nibelungu z Královské vlámské opery v Antverpách.
  10. Časopis Hudební rozhledy uveřejnil v roce 1973 velmi zajímavý rozhovor Jiřího Hilmery s Oldřichem Šimáčkem o jeho výpravě k inscenaci Prsten Nibelungu pro Královskou Vlámskou operu v Antverpách.
  11. V magazínu Ahoj na sobotu Jaroslava Fulminová ve svém článku „Sedmdesát výprav“ v roce 1975 poukazuje na časté zpracování ruské klasiky a celkově sovětských her v Šimáčkově tvorbě.
  12. Ve stejném časopise se v roce 1983 Jan Šimon Fiala v článku „Člověk, který mé zaujal – Potlesk z hlediště“ zaměřil na Oldřicha Šimáčka a na jeho názory na práci a život a kromě toho zveřejnil své vlastní vzpomínky na umělce.
  13. V časopise Gramorevue v roce 1976 v článku „Obrazy za oponou“, který má charakter rozhovoru J. A. Fialy s Oldřichem Šimáčkem.
  14. Posledním odborným periodikem, který se tvorbou Oldřicha Šimáčka dopodrobna zabývá, je časopis Prostor Zlín. Josef Maliva v článku „K letošním devadesátinám scénografa, malíře, kreslíře a návrháře Oldřicha Šimáčka“ představil umělce, jeho život, studium, práci, osobnosti, se kterými pracoval, a které jej ovlivnily. Maliva zde vyzvedl jedinečnost umění scénografie a poukázal na jeho malířské dovednosti v tvorbě obrazů.
